The Semicolon: A Punctuation Mark That Saved Lives

Mental Health Awareness | Suicide Prevention | Your Story Continues

At Gooso Pixel, we believe that mental health awareness is essential. The semicolon symbol (;) represents that your story is not over. It is a pause, not an end. This guide provides resources for anyone seeking support or wanting to help others.

The Origin of Project Semicolon

In the spring of 2013, Amy Bleuel started a movement that would change the way we talk about mental health. She wanted to honor her father, who had died by suicide when she was 18. Bleuel created Project Semicolon as a space where people could talk openly about mental health, without shame ("Our History").

Why a semicolon? In writing, a semicolon is used when an author could have ended a sentence but chose to continue. Project Semicolon took this grammatical mark and gave it new meaning: "The author is you and the sentence is your life" ("Project Semicolon").

Bleuel invited people to draw or tattoo a semicolon on their bodies and share their stories on social media. What started as a simple idea became a global phenomenon. Millions of people around the world now wear the semicolon as a symbol of hope, resilience, and survival.

Understanding the Struggle

Writers and artists have long used their work to express the complexity of mental health. Sylvia Plath, who openly wrote about her own battles with depression, captured the internal struggle in her novel The Bell Jar:

"I took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart. I am, I am, I am" (Plath 243).

This simple declaration of existence speaks to the core of what the semicolon represents. Even when everything feels impossible, the heart keeps beating. You keep going. That persistent "I am" is the pause before the continuation of your story.

Plath also wrote about the overwhelming nature of choice and possibility, describing feeling paralyzed by all the paths her life could take. Many people who struggle with mental health understand this feeling of being stuck, unable to move forward even when they want to. The semicolon serves as a reminder that being stuck is not the end. It is just a pause.

Why We Wear It

At Gooso Pixel, our UNBROKEN collection carries the semicolon symbol because we believe clothing can be more than just fabric. It can have meaning, start dialogue, and support communities working toward mental wellness.

When you wear a semicolon, you send a message. To someone who is struggling, it says "I understand" and "You are not alone." To yourself, it serves as a daily reminder that your story continues. The semicolon has become one of the most recognized symbols of mental health worldwide, and for good reason. It is simple, powerful, and deeply personal.

Bleuel once said: "People want to know they are not suffering in silence, you feel alone like no one cares, to know someone is there, that is what these people go forth with" (qtd. in "Our Vision"). That connection, that sense of community, is what we strive to create through our designs.

Amy Bleuel's Legacy

In March 2017, Amy Bleuel died by suicide at age 31. Her passing was a painful reminder that even those who dedicate their lives to helping others can struggle with the very challenges they seek to address. Mental illness does not discriminate based on a person's strength, character, or advocacy work.

But Amy's legacy lives on. The semicolon she gave to the world continues to inspire hope and offer a space for others to find support. In 2022, Project Semicolon partnered with the video game Apex Legends to introduce a semicolon badge that millions of gamers downloaded, spreading the message to a younger generation ("Our History").

Your story is not over. The semicolon reminds us that we have the power to continue, to seek help, and to support one another. That is the heart of what we do at Gooso Pixel. Through our UNBROKEN collection and our Streetwear with a Voice line, we aim to turn everyday clothing into conversation starters that reduce stigma and connect people to support.
